Thanks to the tremendous support and generosity of Fabutan franchisees, staff and customers, through Fabutan's third annual "Give A Ray of Hope" Campaign, Fabutan was able to contribute $69,000 to Canadian Breast Cancer Research to help aid in the fight against breast cancer. Fabutan has contributed over $150,000 to Breast Cancer Research in the past three years. "Each year, more and more of our customers are helping us 'Give A Ray of Hope' to the 1 in 9 Canadian women and their families who are affected by breast cancer" says Doug McNabb, President of Fabutan Sun Tan Studios. During the month of October, Fabutan customers were able to "Give A Ray of Hope" by adding 75 minutes to any tanning package they purchased for only $10.00. Fabutan in turn contributed the entire $10.00 for each 75 minutes purchased by these customers, to help Canadian Researchers find a cure. Given Fabutan's ongoing commitment to educating the public about how to maximize the benefits while minimizing the risks of too much or too little UV exposure, Doug McNabb committed to shaving his head as Fabutan reached and exceeded its original goal of raising $55,000.00 for Breast Cancer Research. Keeping with his word, McNabb will be having his head shaved at 2:00 pm PST, on January 21, 2005 at the Fabutan located at 2755 Lougheed Highway in Port Coquitlam, BC, and invites everyone to come watch. This specific location won the right to shave his head by being the Fabutan to raise the most money. Studies have shown the strong link between ultra-violet light and the positive effects it has on the body. Ultra-violet light - B, which is found in tanning beds, produces vitamin D in the body, and has been shown to lower the risk of breast cancer. Ester John, an epidemiologist from the North California Cancer Center, found through her research that a regimen of sensible, moderate and responsible exposure to ultra-violet light could reduce the relative risk of breast cancer by 25% to 65%. It was also found that women who live in the southern tier of the U.S. tend to get significantly less breast cancer than those who live in the North, which is due to the amount of sunlight that these women are exposed to. Dr. Michael Holick, a professor of medicine, dermatology, physiology and biophysics at the Boston University School of Medicine, and his team have revealed that sunlight, a key source of vitamin D, activates several genes responsible for regulating cell growth, thus helping to prevent the out-of-control cell division that can lead to cancer. Dr Holick in his book The UV Advantage states that "indoor tanning facilities represent a viable alternative to natural sunshine." "All forms of life need sunlight to survive and it's the regular moderate exposure to ultra-violet light that will provide these benefits," says McNabb. "As more and more evidence strengthens the case for regular moderate exposure to UV light, so does our commitment to causes like this."
